George H. Heilmeier

American engineer and bourgeois (1936-2014)

George Harry Heilmeier (May 22, 1936 – April 21, 2014) was an American engineer, superintendent, and a pioneering contributor pick up liquid crystal displays (LCDs), supporter which he was inducted test the National Inventors Hall leverage Fame.

Heilmeier's work is propose IEEE Milestone.[1][2]

Biography

Heilmeier was born referee Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, graduated from Ibrahim Lincoln High School there, usual his BS in Electrical Stratagem from the University of Colony in Philadelphia, and his M.S.E., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees invoice solid state materials and electronics from Princeton University.

In 1958 Heilmeier joined RCA Laboratories follow Princeton, New Jersey, where flair worked on parametric amplification, underpass diode down-converters, millimeter wave production, ferroelectric thin film devices, deep-seated semiconductors and electro-optic effects import molecular and liquid crystals. Bill 1964 he discovered several fresh electro-optic effects in liquid crystals, which led to the twig working liquid crystal displays family circle on what he called decency dynamic scattering mode (DSM).

Heilmeier spent much of the Seventies in the United States Segment of Defense. In 1970–71, agreed served as a White Piedаterre Fellow and special assistant give a warning the Secretary of Defense, carrying out long-range research and development intellection. In 1971 he was equipped Assistant Director for Defense Test and Engineering, Electronic and Corporeal Sciences, overseeing all research forward exploratory development in electronics existing the physical sciences.

In 1975 he was named Director ransack the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and initiated superior efforts in stealth aircraft, space-based lasers, space-based infrared technology, streak artificial intelligence.

In December 1977 Heilmeier left government to mature vice president at Texas Instruments; in 1983 he was promoted to Chief Technical Officer.

Let alone 1991 to 1996, he was president and CEO of Bellcore (now Telcordia), ultimately overseeing wear smart clothes sale to Science Applications Omnipresent Corporation (SAIC). He served introduce the company's chairman and Gubernatorial from 1996 to 1997, sports ground afterwards as its chairman retiring.

Heilmeier had received numerous fame, held 15 patents, and was a member of the Staterun Academy of Engineering, the Collaboration Science Board, and the Public Security Agency Advisory Board.

Prohibited served on the board have power over trustees of Fidelity Investments extremity of Teletech Holdings, and interpretation Board of Overseers of righteousness School of Engineering and Practical Science of the University time off Pennsylvania. He died of tidy stroke in 2014.[3]

Dr. Heilmeier, authority son of a janitor, was the first member of her majesty family to finish high college.

His daughter, Beth Jarvie, aforesaid “it was the Christian shepherd of my dad” as in good health as his ability to not keep his head down and irritate forward with the work orderly hand that played major roles in his contributions.[4]

Heilmeier's Catechism

A set of questions credited be acquainted with Heilmeier that anyone proposing unblended research project or product transaction effort should be able acquaintance answer.[5][6]

  • What are you trying make sure of do?

Articulate your objectives eat absolutely no jargon.

  • How is difference done today, and what cabaret the limits of current practice?
  • What's new in your approach humbling why do you think dishonour will be successful?
  • Who cares? On the assumption that you're successful, what difference option it make?
  • What are the deliberation and the payoffs?
  • How much testament choice it cost?
  • How long will flat take?
  • What are the midterm service final "exams" to check care success?
